CIRES' Waleed Abdalati Named Chief Scientist at NASA

Waleed AbdalatiAbdalati, who directs the Earth Science Observation Center at CIRES, will oversee and advocate for NASA science. In his new position, Abdalati will serve as chief adviser to NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden on matters relating to agency science programs, strategic planning and the evaluation of NASA's current science investments. Read more.

CIRES’ Thomas Phillips receives NASA fellowship

Thomas PhillipsThomas Phillips, a research scientist with CIRES’ Earth Science and Observation Center, has been selected for a NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. This prestigious fellowship offers a rare opportunity for exceptional rising stars in the environmental and space science communities to contribute to ongoing research programs with NASA and their affiliated institutes. During this two to three year fellowship, Phillips will develop a method for using GRACE and ICESat satellites to take a high-resolution look at the changing mass of the Greenland Ice Sheet. CIRES' Peter Elespuru shares in a prestigious NASA award

CIRES' Peter Elespuru is part of the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) team that has  been selected to receive the NASA Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Software Reuse Working Group Peer-Recognition Software Reuse Award.  This award was established in 2008 by the Working Group to recognize those people whose efforts and projects contribute to the practice of software reuse in the Earth science community and further the work of NASA Earth science research. The NGDC team received the award for their work on the Space Physics Interactive Data Resource (SPIDR) that allows modeling and prediction customers to access and manage historical space physics data for integration with virtual environment models and real-time space weather forecasts.

CIRES Fellow Veronica Vaida receives E. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy

Veronica VaidaCIRES Fellow Veronica Vaida shines as the recipient of the 2011 American Chemical Society's E. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy.  The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments in spectroscopy, the practice of using light to learn about physical properties of molecules. CIRES’ Christa Hasenkopf is one of five University of Colorado at Boulder students to receive a Fulbright scholarship for the 2010-11 term. Hasenkopf, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, will study the mass loading and transport of black carbon in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Read more ...

David Noone, a University of Colorado at Boulder Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and Noah Fierer, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and also a Fellow of CIRES, received the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award, which provide recipients with sizeable grants upwards of $700,000 for research. The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science announced that it has selected Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder and CIRES Fellow Jose-Luis Jimenez, Ph.D., as recipient of the 2010 Rosenstiel Award. “This year a large group of outstanding young scientists were nominated for this award and Jose’s selection is a testament to the quality of his science and the enormous impact of his work within the atmospheric chemistry community.” said Dr. Anthony Hynes, chair of the division of Marine & Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.
