Chapter 3. 1980-1993
Maturity: The Years of Broadening and Deepening
Robert E. Sievers, a professor and former co-chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was not affiliated with CIRES when he was approached by Fellow John Birks in late 1979 with the question of whether he had an interest in being considered as a candidate for appointment as the director of CIRES. Following a nation-wide search, Sievers was invited by the fellows to give a seminar and engage in the interview process on January 24, 1980. He met on February 11 with Wilmot Hess and Joseph Fletcher, director and deputy director of ERL, respectively. These fruitful meetings led to a formal offer of appointment and he took office in the spring of 1980. He served for 13 years, leading the growth of the sponsored- project awards from 30 to 108 by 1992, with the total CIRES funding increasing from $3 million to more than $16 million.
