Global Hydroclimatic Variability

Gupta initiated this new area of research in 1997. Developing simple nonlinear dynamical models that couple global water and energy cycles via terrain, vegetation, oceans, polar ice and the atmosphere, Gupta will explore the "Gaia hypothesis," which posits that global climate is self-regulating due to positive and negative feedbacks. Keith Nordstrom is exploring this topic in his Ph.D. dissertation, which is near completion. This topic is also leading to collaborative research with Thomas Chase of CSES.
