Chapter 7. Atmospheric and Oceanic Research in CIRES:
Atmospheric Physics, Cryospheric and Polar Processes, and Climate Dynamics
Future Prospects
The relocation of the Climate Diagnostics Center to the NOAA facilities
on Broadway in 2000 seriously reduced the contacts and potential for
collaboration between staff in NSIDC and those in CDC, as well as
NGDC and the remainder of ERL. Nevertheless, the size of the NSIDC
group now allows substantial internal collaboration between scientists as
well as staff. The scope of activities is likely to remain wide given the involvement
of scientists in the World Climate Research Program Climate
and Cryosphere (CliC) project, the International Permafrost Association,
the Global Land Ice Measurement from Space project, the Western Water
Assessment project and others. The new themes within CIRES present
opportunities and challenges; challenges because of the existing
over-commitment of personnel in ongoing activities. Nevertheless, the Climate
and CPP groups have some interest in contributing to the themes on Climate
System Variability, on Advanced Modeling and Observing Systems
and on Regional Processes. The next five years will also see a major challenge
and opportunity in the choice of a new director for NSIDC upon
the eventual retirement of Roger Barry from academic duties.
