Chapter 10. Education and Outreach

Undergraduate Research Internships

Hanson and Sievers acquired funding for the undergraduate research internship program through a $2.5 million Colorado Commission on Higher Education Program of Excellence award, the first competitive external support of CIRES Outreach (see chapter three). Up to forty students per semester came through the program from 1989 through 1995, working with fellows throughout CIRES, then fifteen internships per semester were awarded out of remaining grant funds. The benefit of these internships is expressed by a participant thus:

This internship has more than fulfilled my expectations ... Just by working in this environment I have a much better understanding of the level of work and dedication involved in doing research. What has exceeded my expectations is that I have obtained a working knowledge of some of the general principles and topics in meteorology, such as the thermal wind equation, geopotential thickness and its relation to temperature, advection, and some methods of statistical analysis.

-Robert L. Cordingley II, Undergraduate Internship Progress Report

CIRES scientists also participated in a major way in the similarly motivated SMART (Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training) program operated by the Graduate School.
