Chapter 10. Education and Outreach
Education and Social Science
Emo was the first of several graduate students from the School of Education
hired to work within the CIRES Outreach program. Through this ongoing
interaction with the School of Education, CIRES Outreach projects began
to reflect cutting-edge education research in constructivism and distributed
expertise, emphasize the importance of project evaluation and model the
recommendations of the National Science Education Standards. In support
of Weaver and Buhr's new appreciation of geoscience outreach as a discrete
field, two new projects were initiated, designed to contribute to the community
of outreach practitioners. Betsy Andrews, alumna of the NSF program
for Postdoctoral Fellows in Science, Math, Engineering and
Technology Education, joined the CIRES Outreach program while a postdoctoral
fellow at NOAA/CMDL. Together, Weaver and Andrews secured
NSF funding for a project using social science methods to study the
engagement of research scientists in outreach. Buhr secured NSF funding to develop
a project evaluation toolkit for geoscience education, to be part of the
Digital Library for Earth Systems Education collections and community.
Through projects such as these, the influence of CIRES Outreach extends
beyond our work in the K-12 education community to contribute to the
field of geoscience education.
