Foreword

Since its inception in 1967, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) has been a major contributor to the research success and growing national reputation of the Boulder campus. CIRES is an important component in the long-standing tradition at the University of Colorado at Boulder of collaborative, interdisciplinary research, that is increasingly a key element in the future of the scientific enterprise. The visionary faculty and administrators at the University during the 1960s established a number of interdisciplinary institutes, which have attracted top faculty and students and helped seed excellence in affiliated departments and graduate programs. CIRES itself has benefitted from an outstanding group of directors, and, under their leadership, has successfully adapted to changing research problems and agency priorities, often embracing basic and applied research areas of regional and national need.

From the perspective of the educational mission of the University, participation in the research environment of CIRES provides a broader experience for our students than more traditional modes of education. CIRES has always been heavily engaged in graduate education, and students educated in this context go on to positions of leadership in academia, industry and the public sector. This interdisciplinary breadth, in an environment of government-academic partnership, is a model for graduate education in the 21st century.

I have often said that the best part of my job is the responsibility for the Institutes. This history of CIRES-its people and their ideas-will provide ample documentation of the basis for my statement!
