The 2008 CIRES Outstanding Performance Awards Program
CIRES is proud to announce the 10th Annual CIRES Awards Program that again features two separate CIRES outstanding achievement awards: the Science and Engineering Awards designed to honor extraordinary CIRES members who are involved in scientific research and engineering work and the Service Awards designed to recognize outstanding CIRES members who perform vital service through administration, information technology, project management, outreach, or other work not directly related to scientific research or engineering. We have many outstanding members in CIRES ... let's honor them!

See "Nomination Requirements and Tips," below.

Science and Engineering Awards
A program designed to recognize CIRES members for outstanding contributions to scientific research or engineering work.

Do you know a CIRES member or team that has made outstanding contributions to scientific research or engineering work, and had a substantial impact within or external to CIRES? If so this is an opportunity for you to nominate this individual or team for a CIRES award and recognition. Up to three outstanding CIRES members or teams will be awarded a cash prize of $2,000 and honored at the CIRES Symposium.

Award Criteria: In evaluating the nominations, we look for an extraordinary employee or team that meets most or all of these criteria:

  • Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness and/or creativity
  • Has a substantial impact within and/or external to the realm of the member's workplace
  • Undertakes activities that benefit the work place but are not regular job responsibilities
  • Is willing to seek out new challenges

Service Awards
A program designed to recognize CIRES members for outstanding service in administration, information technology, project management, outreach, or other work not directly related to scientific research or engineering.

Do you know a CIRES member or team that has performed outstanding service, and had a substantial impact within or external to CIRES? If so this is an opportunity for you to nominate this individual or team for a CIRES award and recognition. Up to two outstanding CIRES members or teams will be awarded a cash prize of $2,000 and honored at the CIRES Symposium.

Award Criteria: In evaluating the nominations, we look for an extraordinary employee or team that meets most or all of these criteria:

Nomination Requirements and Tips

  • Nominees for a Service Award may include but are not limited to administrative personnel, project/program managers, outreach personnel, web masters/developers, information technology support personnel, system administrators, user services representatives, writers, and library staff. The Service Award may also include scientists and engineers that perform outstanding service through their outreach activities or other service activities not directly related to scientific research or engineering. Nominees who are directly involved in scientific research or engineering work, either in a lead or support role, such as research scientists and engineers, scientific programmers, GIS developers, data analysts, and instrument developers should be nominated for a Science and Engineering Award. If in doubt for which award category to nominate a CIRES member please contact the Awards Committee for guidance.
  • Supporting documentation could include: an electronic copy of a research paper or patent, a letter of commendation from inside or outside the nominee's work place, a link to a web page, photos, etc.
  • The awards committee evaluates the quality of the submitted nomination materials almost as much as they evaluate the nominee. A clear presentation specifically addressing the awards criteria may persuade the awards committee of the outstanding qualities of the candidate.
  • All nomination materials must be submitted by email to the awards committee by February 10, 2008, 23:59 MST. Nominations received after this deadline will be rejected.
  • You will get a reply that the email was received usually within a day. Please email the awards committee if you have not received a response within two days.
  • The nomination letter should be no longer than one letter-size page with font size no smaller than 10 point.
  • Acceptable file formats include Microsoft Word (doc), PDF, Excel (xls) and Text. Image files should be gif, png, jpeg, or bmp (or embedded in a file).
  • The supporting documentation should have a total file size less than 5 MB and should be used in direct support of the nomination letter.
  • The Awards Committee receives many nominations that must be reviewed in a timely manner and thus will not have time to evaluate in detail large quantities of support text, complex web sites, or lengthy research papers. Ideally, supporting documentation should be no more than 2 text pages. If the supporting documentation significantly exceeds this limit, the nominator should highlight the relevant sections of text that support the nomination letter (e.g. by reference in the nomination letter or by including a guide to the support materials).
  • The names, telephone numbers and/or email addresses of two references that are familiar with the candidate's work must be included. At least one reference must be from inside the candidate's work group and if possible one from outside. The awards committee may contact these references to discuss the candidate's work.
