During the night of January 21-22, 2011 — the night I finally flew out of the ice — we witnessed a live “show” of an Adelie penguin versus a Weddell seal at the Hut Point on Ross Island in Antarctica. I also photographed four emperor penguins standing beside the runway to Pegasus International Airport. The beauty of Antarctica has attracted so many people year after year regardless of the harsh environment. Even before I boarded the northbound C-17 flight, I had already begun to miss the magic of Antarctica! Continue reading

About this blog

An award from NSF’s Office of Polar Programs is funding the Chu research group to deploy a Fe Boltzmann lidar to McMurdo, Antarctica to measure the middle and upper atmosphere for three years. Ultimately this project will complete an observational chain for Antarctica in combination with previous lidar measurements made at the South Pole and Rothera, Antarctica.
Dr. Chu and her colleagues developed this lidar more than 10 years ago and with it made lidar observations from the North Pole to the South Pole. Since then the Chu research group has upgraded this lidar for deployment to McMurdo.
On her 5th trip to the Antarctic, Dr. Xinzhao Chu and her research group completed the lidar installation at McMurdo during December 2010 and January 2011. In this blog, she shares the unique experiences of her group there.
PhD student Zhibin Yu braved the Antarctic winter to ensure the success of the McMurdo lidar project. He writes about his experiences in the blog: McMurdo Lidar Project: First Winter
