Weatherizing the radar

To address a problem we’ve had in the past with the cloud radar, we’ve designed a large tube that will go through the roof of the Mobile Science Facility and seal to the bottom of the radar antenna.  This will allow warm, inside air to circulate around the waveguide that connects the radar transmitter to the antenna, and hopefully prevent the buildup of ice (which can diminish the radar sensitivity and lead to other problems).  The last few days have involved a lot of wrestling with this tube, and contemplation about how best to prevent moisture from getting into the hole and or roof.  These pictures detail parts of the journey:  A view down through the hole where Brad, Chris, and Ryan are ready to lift the tube into place;  their view up to me on the outside; and the installed tube.  A few posts back there was also a picture of Duane next to the tube on one of the many times we put it in place to make measurements or draw cut lines….. Next comes the radar installation.
