HOME SCIENCE EDUCATION COLLABORATION SEARCH CIRES

Environmental Scientists. Researchers. Educators. Students. Industry. Policy and Decision Makers. People.
At CIRES, we believe science should serve society. Besides seeking a better understanding of Earth processes, developing better observations, better models, and more responsive forecasting methods, CIRES' programs bring natural and social scientists together with legal specialists and policy makers to address the concerns of people who use and manage environmental resources. The goal? Better decision-making for sustainable environmental and economic conditions

What is a Cooperative Institute?
Cooperative Institutes bring together the expertise and resources of research-oriented universities or institutions with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) personnel to create centers of excellence in research relevant to understanding the Earth.

Our Sponsors
Both NOAA and CU provide financial and intellectual sponsorship for CIRES. NOAA sponsorship involves funding via a cooperative agreement, and CU sponsorship involves organizational support. Funds to support CIRES research are also provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as other federal and non-federal sources.

Visiting Fellow/Fellowships
One of the key programs that CIRES supports to provide research collaboration opportunities is its Visiting Fellows program. Under NOAA sponsorship, CIRES offers one- and two-year Visiting Fellowships and one-year Sabbatical Fellowships each year.

Collaboration Success Stories
CIRES scientists collaborate with researchers across the United States and around the world, and with educators, policy makers, and others to add value to our scientific results and produce payoffs not otherwise possible.

CO2 Emission Reduction Assumptions Are Overly Optimistic
Reducing global emissions of carbon dioxide this century is going to be more challenging than society has been led to believe, according to a new research commentary article appearing April 3 in Nature. CIRES Fellow Roger Pielke Jr. is lead author of the article. [ source: News & Events ]
