Welcome to the University of Colorado at Boulder Lidar Group!

The University of Colorado at Boulder Lidar Group (UCB Lidar Group) consists of two major research groups: the Chu Research Group led by Prof. Xinzhao Chu in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) and the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) and the Thayer Research Group led by Prof. Jeffrey P. Thayer in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) and the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR).

Chu Research Group

Chu Research Group focuses in lidar remote sensing technology development as well as atmospheric and space science study with observations, data analysis, and modeling. The technology development involves atomic, molecular, and laser spectroscopy, lidar technology and instrument development, and cluster remote sensing technology applications including observational campaigns from the North Pole to the South Pole. The science study is currently focused on the polar mesospheric and stratospheric clouds, thermal structure and dynamics in the stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere in both polar and equatorial regions.

Thayer Research Group

Thayer Research Group is an important portion of the Active Remote Sensing Lab. Active Remote SENsing Lab (ARSENL) uses active systems (i.e. transmitters, such as lasers and RF sources) to remotely sense the properties of the Earth aerospace and surrounding geospace environment. This research program within CCAR offers opportunities in engineering and science. The engineering element involves the design, development and deployment of lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) systems and radar (Radio detecting and Ranging) systems on mobile platforms, such as aircraft, and at remote locations, such as Greenland, Alaska and Antarctica. The science element involves research in upper atmospheric/space physics, space vehicle reentry regions, auroral physics, meteor physics, geophysical fluid dynamics and plasma physics.
