COSEE West – Colorado Collaborative

Spring/Summer 2009
Scientist Lecture Series
April 4, May 9, June 11

Summer Institute
June 8-12
for Grades 6-12 Teachers

Our understanding of the ocean and climate systems increases through scientific observation using a variety of tools, data collection/analysis, and computer modeling. Earth's oceans and climate have changed over geologic time.

This teacher professional development program delivers a new ocean and climate science topic each year. This year's theme will address the overarching concept described on the front cover and will include:

  • Scientists sharing their research from cruising the Arctic, Pacific (near Chile), and the North Atlantic and describing the technology used to collect their data.
    Dr. Chris Fairall, NOAA
    Dr. Ola Persson, CIRES CU-Boulder
    Dr. Jeff Hare, NOAA
    Dr. Anita Rapp, NOAA
    Dr. Raul Alvarez, NOAA
    Ludovic Bariteau, NOAA
  • Classroom activities and discussions, lab, computer and field work.
    Dr. Lesley Smith, CIRES CU-Boulder
    Marsha Barber, Retired Science Teacher
  • Evaluating evidence to draw scientific conclusions like scientists do in their work.
  • On-going support to enhance teaching about the oceans and climate systems through our E-learning community.

Lectures

Workshop Lectures

Lecture Series
Three lectures by scientists sharing their cutting edge research will be offered on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. Each lecture will involve some hands-on activities for a warm-up. In addition to being live, the lectures can also be heard through videoconferencing at participating BOCES (Northeast, Central East, Northwest, Sothwest), or online. ALL teachers can participate in this lecture series and will become members of our E-learning community. Please click on each date below for details.

Summer Institute
The week-long summer institute will included classroom hands-on activities and discussions related to the lectures, computer, lab, and field work.

Workshop Dates
June 8 – 12, 2009
8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily
Boulder High School

Applicant Information and Considerations

Applicants The workshop will be limited to 25 teachers. First priority will be given to teachers who are:

  • Currently teaching science to middle or high school students in Colorado
  • Working with MESA students and have ESL experience

We want a mix of teachers from rural, urban and suburban settings. Next year we will be including teachers from the Los Angeles Unified School District, and we will have an exchange program of five teachers between our site and COSEE West.

Stipend Teachers will receive a stipend of $250 upon successful completion of all requirements from both the lecture series and summer institute. This stipend will be awarded in fall 2009. Teachers attending ONLY the lecture series will not receive a stipend.

Graduate credit will be available through the University of Colorado and paid for by participants ($50/credit). Two semester hours of credit will be awarded after successful completion of the lecture series and summer institute. One additional credit can be earned during the 2009-2010 school year for completion of classroom materials (lesson plans, copies of student work and assessments, and a visit/discussion by an evaluator).

Setting Lunch will be provided each day to all participants. For those traveling greater than 60 miles one way, room and board will be provided at no cost to the teachers at the University of Colorado dorms. Participants will share rooms.
