Earth System Science for Secondary Teachers

Weather and Climate

Grade level: 8

Content Area: 8th grade Earth Science

Time: 2-3 weeks

Standards: Will meet St. Vrain Valley's 8th grade ES standards as well as technology and inquiry standards

Background knowledge/skills: Students will need to have knowledge in the following areas:

  • Heat transfer
  • Conversion of units
  • Water cycle (ppt, formation of clouds)
  • Scientific method

Objectives:Students will understand the relationship between dew point, temperature, and relative humidity and how these relate to cloud cover. They will also gain a deeper understanding of satellite imagery and how it relates to local weather.

Materials:

Procedures:

Teachers: review prior concepts; prepare students for field study; facilitate students to know how to use appropriate methodology; show how to use equipment

Students: conduct field studies; analyze and conclude data; collect data; form new questions after project; research internet; create powerpoint presentation and make graphs using excel

Assessment: Powerpoint presentation assessing how students went about collecting, analyzing, inferring, concluding, and questioning project results. Students will be graded on their recording logs, answers to research/probing questions

Enrichment/Reflection: Various observation activities to support student inquiry into asking deeper questions. Implement rules into how to behave in the field. Use my passion from this project to spark their interest

Resources: Supportive admin, parental involvement, own personal experience with conducting this research, state and local support (friend from Earthworks)

Barriers: Lack of equipment

Responses: Overcome lack of equipment by raising money for equipment, borrowing from appropriate resources, and using these resources to help engage students and validate their learning
