Ocean Interactions
Ocean and Atmosphere connecting Scientists, Teachers & Students

2005 Cruise:

Ocean Interactions Crew, 2005

There are 20 scientists and 1 teacher participating in the RICO (Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean) experiment. Ocean Interactions is the part of the experiment that involves connecting scientists, teachers and students in learning about atmospheric and oceanic science. During the 2nd leg of the cruise which occurs between January 15 - February 3, 2005, Judy Malley, a sixth grade teacher from Ann Arbor, Michigan and Dr. Pacquita Zuidema, an atmospheric scientist from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, will be keeping daily logs of the research conducted, taking pictures of ship instruments and research in progress, conducting interviews with scientists and crew, and sharing their personal experiences. This information will be posted on the Web site for teachers, students, parents and the public to follow on a daily basis so they may ask them questions during the research expedition.

Paquita Zuidema, Research Scientist
I've worked at the NOAA Environmental Technology Lab in Boulder for about 3 years, Previously, I was a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I'm originally from the Netherlands, but I've lived in the US most of my life. My research interests have to do with clouds: why they are where they are, what makes them form and then dissipate, how they affect the energy balance of our planet. I've mostly worked with data and like doing field experiments. This is what attracted me to ETL, as a lot of technology for looking at clouds in new ways is developed and deployed here, so that it is almost a guarantee that any field experiment ETL is involved with will produce new insights! For more information about ETL, see www.etl.noaa.gov. For more information about Paquita, see www.etl.noaa.gov/~pzuidema.

Judy Malley, Middle School Teacher
Judy Malley is fulfilling her lifelong dream of being a teacher. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in 1992, she taught fifth grade in Galveston, Texas, returning to Michigan in 1995 so that her husband could pursue his doctorate in Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Since 1995, Judy has been teaching sixth grade science, language arts, and reading in Ann Arbor. She recently completed a Master of Arts degree in the teaching of writing, and is delighted to be participating in the Teacher-at-Sea program.
