Ocean and Atmosphere connecting Scientists, Teachers & Students

2005 Cruise:

January 14, 2005 (Friday)

It's taken me a little time to sleep, eat, settle in, but I'm alive and well. When I arrived in Antigua it was dark & windy. It's VERY warm here, but Antiguans tell me this is a COOL spell at 29 degrees C. I know it sounds cliche, but my first day time view of the ocean was breathtaking. The incredible hues of blue and green are mind-bogglingly beautiful.

Once I made it to the Beachcomber Hotel, I just grabbed the first person I saw wearing a RICO (Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean) badge. Her name was Ruth, a Ph.D. in chemistry from the U.K. She told me about where to get internet service, so I then took a cab into St. Johns to buy some T-shirts and get online.

I underestimated the heat down here (Has that Polar express made it Michigan yet Jeff & Vickie? :) and I had to get some lighter clothes. There was cell phone capability in San Juan, but not here in Antigua. Using hotel phones are way too expensive. I plan on writing some journal entries, and interviewing as many busy scientists who are willing to talk with me today. I miss Paquita, corresponding with her so much in advance makes her feel like an old friend (funny that!) and I'll be glad when she gets here.
