2005 Cruise:

January 17, 2005 (Monday)

I've renamed the Seward Johnson "The Bucking Bronco" (Go BLUE!) and I'm staving off the seasickness okay for the time being. The cook said it's been the roughest waves she's ever seen 10-15 ft. just before arriving in Antigua from the first leg. We had to stay in calm harbor overnight, but we left this a.m. for Barbuda. The mission has us going back and forth on the west (leeward side) of Barbuda to help protect us from the strong winds that make the high swells! The students should remember the lesson we did on Tsunamis and what we learned about the energy transmission through water. It all applies here! I'm trying not to get too bruised up, because the waves have me zig-zagging down the hallway, instead of a straight line. It's kind of like step, step, step, WAIT, and repeat, and hold onto rails if needed! Everyone thinks I'm doing well for my first time at sea. I had to lay down a few times, but I still have my breakfast! :) Since I landed in Antigua I've been thrown into the mix with this highly educated team of scientists and technology experts... they are all amazing people! I wish I could convey to students just how much education can open their worlds... and that could be in my shoes, or any of these scientist's shoes one day. Gotta go now, I'll write later.
