Most Embarrassing Moments of the Teacher at Sea
- Having to excuse myself abruptly (due to motion sickness) and without explanation just as Sara Tucker so generously began to explain the lidar system to me.
- Locking myself out of my cabin.
- Eating a delicious lobster omelet my first morning...too rich, big mistake.
- Describing some weather related phenomena at dinner time only to realize “What am I doing in teacher mode? I’m speaking to a meteorologist!"
- My first day on the ship, weaving my way down a perfectly straight hallway (trying to find my "sea legs").
- The coup de gras... I was standing in water nearly up to my neck. We were leaving the beach of Barbuda. Three shipmates had to pull me up on the rubber dingy when I was unable to pull myself aboard! Where’s a good rope ladder when you need one?
Other Amazing Moments on Land and Sea
- Seeing the King Air and the C130 aircraft fly off the starboard bow of the Seward Johnson, and hearing the power of those engines!
- Walking into the Land Operation Center on the first full day in Antigua... and realizing the complexity and beauty of this bigger-than-life science mission. About 60 people spread out with their lap tops, and yet you could have heard a pin drop!
- Finally understanding what it means when authors write the phrase "The smell of the ocean."
- Watching dolphins skim the water off the port bow, and catching my first glimpse of flying fish.
- Searching for choice shells and the famous pink sands on the beach of Barbuda.
- Being able to turn around 360 degrees with nothing but sand, sea, and sky to look at on the beach of Barbuda. Then being able to see the sunset... pink and purple clouds shimmering in golden streams of light. Incredible!
- Seeing the full moon (like a spot light) at its zenith on board the Seward Johnson.
- Eating extremely well! The Seward Johnson’s cooks had real talent. Yum!
- In Antigua, smelling the heavy rose-like scent of those mysterious yellow flowers.
- After being out at sea for four days and being able to climb up a ladder without whispering prayers for safety. A crew member heard me taking the stairs quickly one day and exclaimed “Hey! You took those stairs pretty fast, I guess you finally found your sea legs!" Amen.
