What are you hoping to gain from this trip?
What I have hoped for is definitely coming true! In terms of science, I was curious about these questions: What are the best predictors of rain? Is it a combination of wind speed, direction, humidity, and temperature? Do scientists know the answers to these questions already? The scientists do know some of the answers, but now that I've been watching their experiments I've realized that we share many of the same questions. In terms of what I've gained personally… I just have to say that's it is such a privilege to be here. I'm amongst these incredibly brilliant people who take the time to patiently speak with me about their research. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I'm enjoying every minute of it (except the seasickness of course!). –Judy
How do you determine the age of clouds?
We have a lot of trouble determining the age of clouds. First you have to decide when a cloud begins and when it ends.
Does ash effect the clouds? If so how?
Ash affects clouds in a lot of ways. Cloud droplets tend to be smaller when the air is dirtier. Ash can also change the way clouds rain, and how they form. Whether or not the ash is within cloud, or above the cloud, is also important.
