Ocean Interactions Laser ceilometer for measuring the heights of clouds This device is called a 'laser ceilometer' and measures the height of the clouds above the surface. The laser is infrared light (you can't see it), and the laser light bounces off the bottom of the cloud. Sensors inside the box detect the light that bounces back and measures the time that it took for the light to return to the ceilometer in order to estimate the height of the cloud.
