Ocean Interactions Getting water from the ocean depths![]() In order to get water from the ocean depths for making the chemical measurements, a rosette of bottles is dropped down at regular intervals during our trip. The bottles are open when the device is lowered over the side, and when the desired depth is reached, an electronic signal is sent to close a single bottle, thus capturing the water at that depth. Here (L to R), Chief Survey Technician Jonathan Shannahoff, scientist Jan Kaiser of Princeton, and scientist Mike Behrenfeld of NASA draw samples of water from the bottles for chemical analysis. |
