Exploring Connections between the Global Oceans and the Inland Southwest
Course Details
In 2012 a spring lecture series of cutting edge research combined with a weeklong Summer Institute will focus on the link between the global oceans and water resources in the Western U.S. Colorado’s State Climatologist along with members of the Western Water Assessment will be feature speakers.
Lectures and connecting activities will be offered in a face-to-face format at the University of Colorado's ATLAS Building and in an interactive distance learning format via videoconference. The Summer Institute will consist of scientist lectures, classroom activities and discussions, lab and computer work, and field trips.

Applicants: The workshop will be limited to 25 teachers. First priority will be given to teachers who are:
- Currently teaching science to middle or high school students in Colorado
- Working with MESA students and have ESL experience
We want a mix of teachers from rural, urban and suburban settings. Starting this year we will have 5 teachers from the Los Angeles Unified School District participating through our teacher exchange program with COSEE West.
Stipend: Colorado teachers will receiving a stipend of $250 upon successful completion of all requirements from both the lecture series and summer institute.
Graduate credit: will be available through the University of Colorado and paid for by participants ($60/credit). Two semester hours of credit will be awarded after successful completion of the lecture series and summer institute. One additional credit can be earned during the 2012-2013 school year for completion of classroom materials (lesson plans, copies of student work and assessments, and a visit/discussion by an evaluator).
Setting: Lunch will be provided each day to all participants. For those traveling greater than 60 miles one way, room and board will be provided at no cost to the teachers. Participants will share rooms.
Applications must be received by March 23, 2012 to be considered for this course.
