Earthworks PhilosophyEarthworks is guided by the philosophy that students learn through active involvement with real life experience. During Earthworks, teachers to experience the scientific process themselves, using equipment that is available in the classroom and researching topics of relevance to secondary science education. Overview
At Earthworks, you'll work in small groups with scientists and other teachers in designing and conducting research projects. Through fieldwork, observations, and small-group discussions, you'll have a chance to practice a variety of teaching and learning techniques. You'll develop skills in designing and conducting research projects that you can take back to your own students. During our time together, we'll study different issues related to the beautiful environment of the Rocky Mountains. The Earthworks staff will provide scientific resources in a variety of disciplines, including geology, meteorology, biology, chemistry and hydrology. We emphasize a self-directed learning experience in which you create your own project. Your focus area might be mining, weather, ecosystemsor another topic that's relevant to your interests and school community. After participating in the six-day workshop, you'll become part of an ongoing community including both teachers and scientists. Throughout the school year, you'll have the opportunity to participate in discussion groups supporting you and the other participants. Who should come? This workshop is designed primarily for newly practicing teachers who want to learn more about Earth system science, though mid-career and highly experienced teachers are also encouraged to apply. No previous knowledge of Earth science is required. How much will it cost? Travel, lodging, meals and materials are provided at no charge. Accommodations will be dormitory-style camp lodging, and a limited number of outdoor camp sites. Childcare is provided for the children of participants and scientists. Family members are welcome at the participants’ own cost. University credit is available at cost. |
