Stream Health Monitoring

Stream flow measurements, water chemistry measurements over time

Local water monitoring is critical piece of Oregon Salmon Restoration Plan. Students will be able to gather data for use in local management.

I would propose to include the entire class, broken into groups. Given that I have two science/social studies classes, students will be able to gather data and consider it both in a scientific and social context. Each class will repeat measurements and compare for verifiability.

The time frame will be year-round, weather permitting. The activity will be a major component within a theme of "water" and will include instruction in : hydrology, biology, chemistry, water use, urban-rural planning/regulation.

Measurements: 2 per mo./1 per mo. Measurements will include: stream-flow, water chemistry, and temp. A cooperative agreement between my school and Water Resources allows for use of gaging station and flow equipment. Also needed: water test kits, thermometer. State WRD staff will also be included. Gage is located adjacent to school property.

Students will be collecting real data for use in local management issues. Activity will be incorporated into curriculum.
