Earth System Science for Secondary Teachers

Rock in and around East Brunswick
Learning Objectives: TSWBAT classify rocks based on observable traits. TSWBAT formulate a hypothesis as to how the rocks are formed.
Where: Churchill Jr. High School, East Brunswick, NJ. Samples will be taken from students' background.
Who: 130 8th grade Earth Science students.
What:
- Students will make observations of the physical properties of various rocks.
- We will learn the rock types and the methods in which they formed.
- Students will review the physical property observations of the previously seen rocks and classify them.
- The students will bring in 2 rocks from around their house (backyard) and classify them.
- What geologic processes formed the rocks in East Brunswick?
When: Spring 2003.
Potential Barriers: Strict curriculum, student samples may be landscaping, ID problems.
Possible Strategies: Good planning, knowledge of E. Brunswick geology, ID books if needed.
