Rock in and around East Brunswick

Learning Objectives: TSWBAT classify rocks based on observable traits. TSWBAT formulate a hypothesis as to how the rocks are formed.

Where: Churchill Jr. High School, East Brunswick, NJ. Samples will be taken from students' background.

Who: 130 8th grade Earth Science students.

What:

  1. Students will make observations of the physical properties of various rocks.
  2. We will learn the rock types and the methods in which they formed.
  3. Students will review the physical property observations of the previously seen rocks and classify them.
  4. The students will bring in 2 rocks from around their house (backyard) and classify them.
  5. What geologic processes formed the rocks in East Brunswick?

When: Spring 2003.

Potential Barriers: Strict curriculum, student samples may be landscaping, ID problems.

Possible Strategies: Good planning, knowledge of E. Brunswick geology, ID books if needed.
