Greenough Park Ecological Study
What: Foster scientific literacy and a sense of place by conducting site-based ecological studies in Greenough Park
Why: Greenough Park is a "natural" riparian area in Missoula facing numerous ecological issues (stream mismanagement, absence of natural disturbance, invasive weeds, bull trout habitat, etc.). it is an ideal setting for students to use techniques in the field and apply them to current local issues.
Who: 10th-grade biology students
When: The site will be used all year. First as a place to develop observation and journaling skills - used as place to collect data (water quality, soils, vegetation, habitat use by spring migrants, etc.) Students will propose changes to present management plan or write letters of support to city council on management practices using class data at end of year. In March, students will also participate in a restoration ecology project clearing Norway maple trees.
Resources: kits, experts, transportation, administration support
How: Students will pick area of study within park, participate in service learning and be able to share ideas which may lead to change.
