Water Quality in the Milwaukee River

Time: 6 weeks
Standards: Inquiry, investigation, communication, understanding systems, understanding local geography and geology
Background knowledge/skills: Study will take place within the geology unit. Learning objectives will take place during study mid-point in geology unit. Discussion: Crandon Mine (WI); influence affect water quality; deep tunnel project
Objectives: Students will learn about local geology, geography, and water quality by examining the Milwaukee River. (Point of Interest: Breweries, dump, new condo development, overtime?
Materials: GPS unit, water quality test kits, local maps, geology guide books.
Procedures:
- Students will gather local rocks, identify- geol (lat, long, compass use)
- Students will test temp, pH, metals-record in field notebook
- Make predictions, hypothesis, analysis of water quality
Assessment: Performance-based, analysis of field notebooks, lab write-ups
Enrichment/Reflection:
