What do lichens 'liken'? What's the RED stuff?

Learning Objectives:
- Observation skills.
- Appreciation of diversity of lichens.
- Comparison of lichen and communities.
- Understanding of symbiotic relationships.
Where: Silver River State Park. 7th grade trail - 4 different plant communities - sandhill, swamp, riparian, hammock.
Who: Every 7th grader on field trip to Silver River Museum.
What: Students will be given a data sheet to focus observation of lichens on trees, rocks and soil in four communities. Students will also be given hand lenses. Once observations are made in four communities, students will make comparisons and draw conclusions about lichens and where they grow?
When: Every field trip day August to May. Weather permitting. 30-45 minutes.
Potential Barriers: Student interest/attention. Student/teacher preparedness. Weather.
Possible Strategies: Engage students. Supply background information.
