Earth System Science for Secondary Teachers

Science Standards: Inquiry

Time: Fall/Spetember-1 week-2 weeks; Spring/May-1 week

Background Needs: Watershed, Value of Water

Objectives:

  • Appreciate the importance of water as a natural resource/vital for life.
  • Understand the impact we (humans) have on our watershed.

Procedures:

  • Pose questions/Problems to solve. "You are a limnologist who has been hired by the IEPA to determine; why there are dead fish in the pond downstream from your creek?"
  • Review watershed
  • Brainstorm value of water
  • Go out and inventory natural resources in our watershed
  • Write journal about watershed and hypothesis problem
  • Collect and test water samples
  • Collect and ID benthic macroinvert.
  • Graph and analyze data
  • Discuss findings-journal
  • Write report/conclusion to IEPA

Assessment:

  • check graphs
  • check conclusions/reports to IEPA
  • Write songs with drama about water suing vocabulary learned. Example-To tune of itsy bitsy spider

Enrichment:

Macro invert. Tag game

Barriers:

To avoid discipline problems outside, I will do this "lesson" in September when we (kids and I) are fresh, interested, and capable of good attitudes. If I wait until May, sometimes behavior and attitudes have deteriorated. Having done this in the fall, we can go out and respect in May when Macroinverts will be plentiful.
