Earthworks
Earth System Science for Secondary Teachers

Matt Riegle (Earthworks 2001)

Technology & Earth Science Collaboration

Who: Computer Science students (secondary)

What: Provide a software resource, based on field research in cooperation with Earth science students.

Why: To incorporate CS technology with other fields of science.

Where: Yellow Springs (Dayton, OH)

When: Fall/Spring 2001/2002

Potential Constraints: Transportation for on-sight observance

Materials: PC, design software, field research data

Methods:

  1. Have both CS and Earth science students observe a specific field site that has been selected for study.
  2. Based on this observation, design a software resource that would best represent the study.
  3. Discuss with Earth science students the desired software format (data presentation, fields, etc.).
  4. Create program based on selected needs.
  5. Brief/Demonstrate software functions.
  6. Import data (research information, descriptions, calculations, images, etc.)

Connections to Other Projects: The ability to understand/relate use requests for specific software needs. Interpreting these needs in forms of design, user interaction, and function.
