Arkansas River Study

What: Study water quality (O3, pH, temp, nutrients, minerals), organisms in (micro and macro) and beside (flora and fauna), geologic setting, and sedimentation processes of the Arkansas River origin (Lake County, CO) to its exit from Colorado.

Why: I want to do this project because I am familiar with the Arkansas headwaters and water motivates students.

Who: All students (120 to 150) would be involved. Would need lots of help from parents, administrators who love kids and trips, and visiting scientists. Also need to find like-minded teachers in Leadville, Buena Vista, Salida, Cañon City, Pueblo, and plains communities who would do similar projects and share data over the Internet.

When: Hopefully Fall 1999 would be the start time

Resources needed: Will include equipment, identification keys , visiting scientists, parents, student-made equipment, and help from all imaginable locally-based organizations. Student ownership and involvement nurtured by: outdoor activities around water "real" science use of computers communication with other students (other towns) This river study is the curriculum and supports many district standards.
