Ocean Interactions Deploying a buoy with instruments There are occasions when things don't go exactly as planned. After deploying a newly instrumented buoy, the data from each instrument is checked using radio signals from the buoy to the ship. During a recent deployment, the rain gauge on top of the buoy was not working correctly. Rather than bringing the buoy back onto the ship (which takes at least 3-4 hours), one approach to trouble-shooting is to have the technicians climb aboard the buoy. Here, NOAA PMEL technicians Korey Martin (on top) and Mike Craig work to fix the problem (Korey actually has a laptop computer with him). AB Jim Melton and BGL Dave Owen stand by in the small boat. The waves were rough enough that Mike and Korey got a little seasick after spending 30 minutes on the buoy. Most importantly, they fixed the problem. |
