General Information About the DepartmentThe Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in environmental engineering and water resources engineering. For the B.S. degree, undergraduate students pursue the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering track in the Civil Engineering curriculum. For the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, graduate students participate in the Environmental Engineering or Water Resources Engineering Programs. Involvement in Environmental Education and ResearchThe undergraduate track in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering focuses on water quality and quantity in the context of civil engineers as providers of society's infrastructure. The graduate program in Environmental Engineering emphasizes characterization and protection of natural waters, drinking water treatment, biological wastewater treatment, and air quality. The graduate program in Water Resources Engineering emphasizes study of the hydrologic cycle, flow and transport in surface water and ground water, environmental fluid mechanics, and water resource system management on regional, national, and international levels. There are currently about 25 undergraduates and about 90 graduate students (about 70 M.S. and 20 Ph.D.) studying or researching environmental topics. ResearchersPlease see the faculty listing on the department's website for information on who is involved in the research of environmental subjects.Other InformationFaculty and students in our program participate with the Center for Drinking Water Optimization, the Center for Advanced Decision, and the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research.Faculty and students in our program collaborate with researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey (East Research Campus) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Boulder).
