Baselt, J.P. A. Foerster, C. Wachsmann, K. Wagemann. THE ANATOMY AND EVOLUTION OF THE SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH IN THE GERMAN CHEMICAL INDUSTRY AND ITS FUTURE PERSPECTIVES
DECHEMA e.V., Theodor-Heuss Allee 25, Frankfurt am Main, 60486, Germany (fofoe@dechema.de)

In Germany it is well understood that close co-operation is necessary between politicians and the other target groups in order to transpose the idea of sustainability in chemistry into laws, directives and voluntary obligations successfully. The Association of the German Chemical Industry and its member companies have committed themselves to a sustainable future-oriented development in the context of the worldwide Responsible Care initiative. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has adopted a programme to develop new processes and products that promise to make a major contribution to a sustainable development. Furthermore a DECHEMA working party on "Metrics for Sustainable Chemistry" has been established.
