The Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division has initiated many pollution prevention technologies into all aspects of energetic materials processes and production. These technologies address a full range of environmental issues and lead to solving the environmental problems facing the Department of Defense in all applications of explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics. These technologies have been referred to as "Green Energetic Chemistry" whereby new ingredients, formulations, nonpolluting manufacturing processes and munitions combustion products have less environmental impact and improved cost savings over the previous conventional materials and practices. This paper will highlight the full spectrum of new green chemistry and synthesis, nonpolluting and recyclable formulations, and pollution prevention in propellant energetic materials manufacturing processes.
