Education is a cornerstone issue for the successful development of Green Chemistry. The Green chemistry educational program at IUCT seeks to facilitate information on basic principles and emerging chemical technologies in the field of Green Chemistry to university, industry and to the society. A Green Chemistry course was developed in 1998 consisting of a 45-hr course with 50% classroom sessions and 50% hands-on laboratory sessions. The topics introduced include the 12 Green Chemistry Principles, atom economy, alternative synthetic schemes, alternative solvents, renewable feedstocks and real cases of Green Chemistry in industry. In addition to these topics, students learn concepts from less familiar areas such as toxicology, waste management, safety and hygiene. At the industrial level, a 30-hour training program is under development. It is expected that 400 industrial chemists from 45 chemical plants will receive basic training in Green Chemistry.
