The utilization of dense gases for the processing of pharmaceuticals has attracted considerable interest in recent years. Some of the most recent studies have involved the use of dense gas technology for the micronisation and microencapsulation of pharmaceuticals, the comminution of poorly-water soluble drugs and the simultaneous synthesis and micronisation of therapeutic substances in dense gas environments. Of particular importance in the future development of dense gas technologies will be applications involving the formulation of therapeutic substances suitable for administration as aerosols and inhalants.
