Japan Chemical Innovation Institute (JCII) was established in 1998 to provide a platform for all chemical sectors in Japan. It aims to contribute realizing sustainable development of society through promotion of innovations in chemical technology in the context of Green & Sustainable Chemistry. JCII played a central role in establishing "Green & Sustainable Chemistry Network (GSCN)" in 1999. It supported to open a home-page of GSCN (http://www.gscn.net) in September 2000. It developed several survey reports on worldwide GSC activities as well as proposals for projects and programs funded by the government. It supported a nation wide symposium on GSC and the OECD Tokyo workshop on R&D in the context of Sustainable Chemistry sponsored by MITI in October 2000. Examples and scope developed through such activities will be discussed.
