Civilian Applications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CAUAS) This, the "first community symposium dedicated to civilian applications of UAS, was intended to develop an integrated vision of future UAS use in the United States incorporating input from agencies, academia and industry.
April 2007
CIRES Science Rendezvous, 2007: Second Annual Science Symposium The second annual Rendezvous, a full day of posters and presentations intended to familiarize all CIRES Members with the depth, breadth, and quality of the pacesetting science being done at CIRES, and thereby encourage collaborations.
March 2007
Ice Fest–Celebrating the Launch of the International Polar Year 2007-2008 With a wide variety of activities around the theme of ice and snow, polar research and climate studies, the Ice Fest included science talks, films, presentations and a range of demonstrations and activities for the entire community.
2005-2006
Policy, Politics, and Science in the White House: Conversations with Presidential Science Advisors To gain perspective on the role of science in policy and politics at the highest levels of government, CIRES' Center for Science and Technology Policy Research sponsored a lecture series featuring the current and former presidential science advisors.
January 2007
Tsunami Symposium A panel of CU experts discussed the December 2004 tsunami disaster and its impact upon the societies of the Indian Ocean region at the Tsunami Symposium. Panelists included area specialists on Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and South India, as well as experts on earthquakes, maritime fisheries, and the sociology of disasters.
August 2004 A Chronicle of Distinction: From the Arctic to the Andes - Roger Barry Symposium The symposium will recognize the significance of Roger Barry’s extensive accomplishments and contributions to the science of climatology, as well as his teaching and mentoring.
August 2003 Broadening DLESE The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is a community-centered resource for people interested in learning about Earth Science. The 2003 annual meeting in Boulder focused on "Broadening DLESE." Specific goals were to develop strategies to: 1) Expand the users and contributors to DLESE; 2) Facilitate efforts to develop earth science data/tools for educational use; 3) Expand DLESE's collection of earth science educational materials; and 4) Strengthen ties between research and educational practice, evaluation and assessment.
March 2003 Assessing Global Glacier Recession A three-day workshop was convened by CIRES' National Snow and Ice Data Center
[ About NSIDC ]
, with the aim of evaluating current methods of determining the worldwide recession of mountain glaciers over the last half-century or longer. This workshop brought together experts from leading groups, as well as under-represented young and female scientists from North America and elsewhere. Twenty-four selected individuals from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, France, India, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, and the United States were funded, and the workshop was open to other interested individuals by invitation.
February 2003 Planetary Metabolism Symposium: Environmental Responses to Anthropogenic Perturbations In February 2003, the planetary metabolism theme group hosted a symposium on the environmental responses to anthropogenic perturbations. Speakers from CIRES discussed a variety of topics, including global climate change, air quality, aquatic ecosystems, and government responses to extreme weather events. The Planetary Metabolism Symposium attracted over 100 attendees, including scientists from CU and NOAA, graduate students, and post-docs, as well as members of the public.
November 2002 International Year of the Mountain Conference: Ecosystems to Earthquakes The International Year of the Mountain Conference, which highlighted CIRES' mountain research efforts, featured a broad cross section of mountain researchers, anthropologists, and adventurers. The conference was open to the general public and was received with enthusiasm.
September 2003 CIRES 35th Anniversary CIRES celebrated 35 years of pacesetting research in a broad range of environmental topics.
August 2002 Superficial Earth Symposium In August 2002, the geodynamics theme group hosted a 2-day symposium to discuss long wavelength topography associated with elastic and inelastic processes in the lithosphere. The Superficial Earth symposium covered topics focused on the elastic thickness controversy and attracted presenters and attendees from around the nation.
June 2002 Third International Workshop on Multiangular Measurements and Models Themes for the "IWMMM-3" workshop included the contributions of multiangular data and the evaluation of radiative transfer models and inversion methods.
September 1998 Fourth International Symposium on Tropospheric Profiling: Needs And Technologies "Advances in atmospheric measurement and numerical modeling techniques have fostered both improved understanding and forecasting of atmospheric behavior in the troposphere. This symposium will provide a critical evaluation of the needs of the user community and the benefits to be provided from improved tropospheric observation. It will also assess the adequacy of current and projected remote sensing and in-situ profiling techniques, such as radar, lidar, sodar, radiometers, and balloon-borne or aircraft instrumentation."
