International Workshop on Multiangular Measurments and Models

Themes

Unique and Innovative Contributions of Multiangular Data
This session will focus on the unique contributions of multiangular observations to key questions in Earth System Science. Examples include:

  • Terrestrial ecosystem dynamics: land use/land cover change, vegetation structure and dynamics
  • Radiation balance: clouds and aerosols, surface albedo
  • Associated feedback mechanisms: vegetation-precipitation, albedo-temperature, soil moisture

Evaluation of Radiative Transfer Models and Inversion Methods
This session will review the state of art in radiative transfer modeling and inversion approaches. It will include the following topics:

  • Phase 2 of the RAdiation Model Intercomparison (RAMI-2) exercise initiated during the IWMMM-2 in 1999
  • Reviews of laboratory, field, airborne and spaceborne campaigns to gather and analyze simultaneous complementary multiangular data sets
  • Synergistic studies of different observational strategies and benefits that accrue from the fusion of multiangular data with other methodologies

Where Do We Go From Here?
This session will look ahead to the future of multiangular measurements and models, taking stock of the scientific and technological progress made over the last decade, as well as the recent achievements described earlier. The session will be organized as follows:

  • Presentation of ideas for future multiangular sensors
  • A round table discussion between a panel of experts and program managers will investigate needs and expectations for the coming decade
