History of Mountain Exploration

An abbreviated trawl through the history of mountain climbing from the days of the earliest exploration and summit-bagging to the present day. The intention is to identify changing trends and tactics, and any contemporary influences which have affected these - while at the same time investigating if and how climbers and their activities have impinged on the rest of the world. Have they made a significant impact on popular culture, for instance, fulfilled any inspirational purpose, perhaps, affected the course of history or affairs of state? Can patterns be discerned in the evolution of climbing? Are there lessons to learn?
