Graduate Education Initiative Workshop on Inverse Modeling and Data Assimilation Technology
Date: Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Time: 1:20-5:00 PM
Location: CIRES Auditorium (directions)
CIRES and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host a Graduate Education Initiative Workshop on Inverse Modeling and Data Assimilation Technology (IMDA) on April 8, 2008. Anyone interested in CU earth system sciences is welcome to participate in this free, half-day workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the need for formal training in IMDA technology in earth system sciences graduate programs. The workshop would include interdisciplinary panel presentations on current practices in environmental quantitative assessment and model-based analyses and predictions. There will also be an open discussion on how enhancing education in IMDA technology could advance these practices. The workshop will be held from 1:20-5:00 PM in the CIRES Auditorium. A full agenda is provided here (PDF).
IMDA technology is used for improving quantitative assessment of complex processes by (1) integrating physical models with observations, (2) advancing model-based hypothesis testing by inversion of modeled parameters from measurements, and (3) assessing uncertainties in system analysis and prediction. IMDA technology is already considered critical in many areas of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, and could play a significant role in other earth system disciplines.
