NOAA/NGDC in affiliation with CIRES has developed a 24 arc-second coastal relief model (CRM) of southern Alaska. The DEM ranges from 170º E to 130º W and 48º to 66º N, and integrates bathymetry and topography to represent the earth’s surface. It spans over the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Alaska’s largest communities: Anchorage, College, Fairbanks, and Juneau. The relief model consists of a variety of source datasets acquired from the National Geophysical Data Center, National Ocean Service, United States Geological Survey, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other various agencies.

The CRM provides a framework to enable scientists to model tsunami propagation and ocean circulation. In addition, it is a tool for benthic habitat research, weather forecasting, environmental stewardship, and general cartographic applications.
