SUBJECT: Traveling with University Property

The University has experienced a significant number of losses due to theft of equipment from employees taking equipment home or on trips.

If you take University property home overnight, or travel with it, please follow basic safety and security procedures to prevent theft:

Do not leave valuable equipment in your vehicle. Leaving property in your vehicle, particularly when it is parked in the street or an unsecured parking area, is an invitation for theft, and could result in damage to your vehicle as well.

When traveling by air, do not pack valuable electronic equipment, data, and files in your checked luggage. We have experienced losses of computers, cameras, etc., especially when traveling to foreign countries. It is a requirement to leave your baggage unlocked for security purposes and this has resulted in theft of university equipment. Either carry on your electronic equipment and plan to ship expensive equipment and important data separately to your final destination if you cannot carry it on. The insurance policy for the University of Colorado covers property anywhere in the world, however, when there is no sign of forced entry to obtain the property, a $2,500 deductible will be applied to your loss. Because the University of Colorado is self-insured, this results in your department having to pay that amount when replacing the items.

Just as a reminder, keep all carry on items close at hand and within sight at all times. Be aware, if you don't have permission to take University property off campus you may be held accountable for the loss. Please protect University property in your care and custody, and don't tempt those with a dishonest streak!
