  • Associate Professor & CIRES Fellow, Mar. 2008 - Present
  • Assistant Professor & CIRES Fellow, Aug. 2002 - Mar. 2008
  • Carried out Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) measurements in field studies at the Pittsburgh EPA Supersite (PAQS, Sep'02), Mexico City (MCMA, Apr'03), Williams Village in Boulder (BFS, Jun'03), Duke Forest (CELTIC, Jul'03), New York City (PMTACS-2, Jan'04), Storm Peak (INSPECT-2, Apr'04), Nova Scotia, Canada (ICARTT, Jul'04), Riverside (SOAR-1, Jul-Aug'05, and SOAR-2, Nov'05), Mexico City (MILAGRO / MCMA-2006 / MAX-MEX, Mar'06), Veracruz in C-130 aircraft (MILAGRO / MIRAGE-Mex, Mar'06), Seattle in C-130 aircraft (INTEX-B/IMPEX, Apr.-May’06), Missoula (FLAME-1, June'06; & FLAME-2, May-Jun'07), Houston in P3 aircraft (TexAQS2/GoMACSS Aug.-Sep.'06), and Blodgett Forest, CA (BEARPEX-1, Aug-Oct. 2007), Amazon rainforest, Brazil (AMAZE, Jan.-Feb. 2008).
  • Research highlights: with my group we have pioneered several new techniques of data acquisition and/or analysis for the AMS, including the development of the data acquisition software for the ToF-AMS and HR-ToF-AMS, and of data analysis software for the latter; the application of factor analysis methods to AMS organic mass spectra, which led to the discovery of the pervasive dominance of oxygenated species (OOA) in the ambient organic aerosol mass, and that anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol is greatly underestimated by current models in urban areas; the rigorous interpretation of joint DMA-AMS sizing measurements; the first deployment of a HR-ToF-AMS in aircraft; the development of eddy covariance flux measurement capabilities for the Q-AMS and ToF-AMS; the interpretation of AMS particle beam width measurements; the extraction of PAH concentration data from AMS spectra; the first application of the AMS to new particle formation events; the quantification of O/C, H/C, and N/C ratios for organic compounds from HR-ToF-AMS spectra; and the quantification of the volatility of organic aerosol types in the field using a thermal denuder-AMS system.
  • Current advisor to 5 PhD students, 3 postdocs, one research scientist, one scientific programmer, one undergraduate student, and two international visitors.

California Institute of Technology Dept. of Environmental Science and Engineering, Pasadena, CA
Postdoctoral Scholar, June 2000 - July 2002. Advisors: Profs. John Seinfeld and Richard Flagan

  • Deployed an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) on board of the CIRPAS Twin Otter Aircraft during the ACE-Asia and CRYSTAL-FACE projects (first airborne operation of any AMS).
  • Carried out an experimental and modeling study of new particle formation from the photooxidation of a halogenated organic in a smog chamber.

  • Co-developed and demonstrated an advanced Aerosol Mass Spectrometer. Built a real-time control, and data acquisition, analysis, and display system.
  • Led the first three field measurements campaigns with the AMS: the U.S. EPA particulate matter “Supersite” experiments in Atlanta (1999) and Houston (2000) as well as the Georgia FAQS 2000 experiment.

  • Co-developed and applied a new laser-based cross-road remote sensor for motor vehicle emissions measurement, in collaboration with Aerodyne Research (Chemistry Group).
  • Demonstrated sensitivity one to two orders of magnitude better, and optical path five times longer, than previous techniques.
  • Led two field campaigns for automobile and heavy duty diesel truck emissions measurement and subsequent data analysis.
