CIRES scientists Abdalati, Solomon, contribute to new reports

The reports are almost like a manual to the U.S. government for understanding and dealing with climate change. And Waleed Abdalati, a Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) Fellow brought his expertise to the discussion, contributing to the report, Advancing the Science of Climate Change, one of three new publications by the National Research Council aimed at giving the U.S. government the information it needs to develop a climate change action plan.

“This report is another affirmation of the climate change consensus and specifically examines climate change in the context of the U.S. Interests,” said Abdalati, the Director of the Earth Science Observation Center. Abdalati worked on the panel that provided an overview of how to best advance the physical, ecological, and human aspects of climate change science.

The reports, released May 19, 2010, are the product of “America’s Climate Choices,” a partnership between the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Academy of Sciences, which was tasked with assessing climate change issues and recommending possible courses of action. The other reports, Limiting the Magnitude of Climate Change and Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change, which suggest such things as carbon dioxide emission reduction goals and how to prepare and deal with impacts such as sea-level rise respectively, are also available on the “America’s Climate Choices” website.

“It really was a privilege for me to work on this report with such a distinguished group of colleagues,” said Abdalati. “All of whom were clearly committed to providing an accurate assessment of the state of knowledge and actionable recommendations for ensuring America’s success in the face of the climate challenges that confront us.”

CIRES Fellow Susan Solomon also played a key role in the development of the reports, serving on the committee that oversaw the panels.
