Research Interests

Kathryn (Katie) Boyd is an Education and Outreach Associate at CIRES, focusing on managing the CLEAN collection of climate educational resources. She earned her BS from the University of Washington and her MS from Colorado State University (CSU), both in Atmospheric Science. During these programs, she became interested in science education and outreach and worked with many groups helping the general public learn about weather & climate. She then returned to school and completed an interdisciplinary program with a focus on science education research, receiving a second MS in Ecology and Education from CSU. She previously worked in a science museum and has experience in informal education. Her professional interests include science education, outreach, and communication, specifically helping to build bridges between the scientific community and the public.

Current Research

My work includes educational research to look at how educators implement climate change topics such as natural hazards and community resilience in classrooms and how climate education efforts interact throughout the U.S. I also led a study looking at the impact on mentors who participated in an outreach program. I am currently working on research related to an informal education program with an exhibit about water that travels to rural libraries in the Southwest US. In that work, I am focusing on how libraries fit into the larger learning ecosystem and how people interact with multiple ways of knowing, including science and traditional ecological knowledge. I continue to pursue efforts related to climate change communication and the impacts of informal education, outreach.
