Connecting the global oceans to inland audiences

The focus of Exploring Connections between the Global Oceans and the Inland Southwest is to illustrate the importance of the ocean to our region’s weather and climate, as well as to explore how inland populations affect the global oceans.

Over a four year period we offered teacher professional development on a new ocean and climate topic each year accompanied by related lectures delivered by scientists on their cutting edge research. Funding for the COSEE West – Colorado Collaborative has ended, but we have a series of resources available to teachers that want to learn more about this topic.

This program is a collaboration with the Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) West directed by University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles and College of Exploration and University of Colorado's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences.

This project was generously supported through the NOAA Office of Global Programs award NA07OAR4310168, the NSF Office of Polar Programs award ARC 0714053, and the NSF Directorate for Geosciences award OCE 0828805.

Resources

How do the oceans affect our local climate and how, in turn, do we affect the global oceans?

We explored these questions through a series of lectures by scientists that described their research

We produced a CD – Water in the West – that includes lesson plans aimed at the secondary science level.
