p. 14, Table 2.1 - the two lines for Granite (MA) have incorrect values.
p. 59, Figure 2.36. Vertical and horizontal are transposed. The horizontal lines are timing lines at 10 ms intervals; each vertical trace represents one geophone's response.
p. 68, figure 3.2. time difference shown to measure the slope should be '126 ms' not '126 s'
p. 73 Eqn. 3.19 has an extra = sign. Eqn. 3.20 has two extra = signs
p. 74 Eqn 3.21 has an extra = sign
p. 89, text refers to an older version of Figures 3.13 and 3.14 so needs to be updated
p 98, equation 3.43, change the "-" sign to a "+" sign
p. 122 In the text between eqs. 3.71 and 3.72 should say Tgf = Tgr instead of Tgf + Tgr
p. 141, Problems 3.1-3.3. PDF versions of the figures are online:
p. 144, problem 3.7. Distance units are meters. Time units are ms.
p. 144, problem 3.8. Distance units are meters. Time units are ms.
p. 144, Problem 3.9. The data file was omitted from the CD but can be downloaded here. It is a data file for use with the Refract code included with the text (you have to open the file by selecting "Open" from the File menu--the file will open best if opened with the Data Window frontmost but will still open correctly if the model window is frontmost). Save the file to disk for use.
p. 145, problem 3.10. Distance units are meters. Time units are ms.
p. 145, problem 3.11. Time units are ms.
p. 146, Problem 3.12. The data file was omitted from the CD but can be downloaded here. It is a data file for use with the Refract code included with the text (you have to open the file by selecting "Open" from the File menu--the file will open best if opened with the Data Window frontmost but will still open correctly if the model window is frontmost). Save the file to disk for use.
p. 146, problem 3.13. Distance units are meters. Time units are ms.
p. 147, problem 3.14. Distance units are meters. Time units are ms.
p. 172, Figure 4.13. The y axis is off by a factor of 10, i.e., instead of scale going from 0-6000 it should be from 0-60,000.
p. 253, Figure 4.50b, should state "interval velocities," not "internal velocities," on the upper right hand side of Figure 4.50b.
p. 256-7, Figure 4.52. Time scale for Fig. 4.52a is in error; the correct scale was used in 4.52b
p. 350. The radii are reversed; the radius at the equator is 6.378 x 108 cm and at 45° latitude is 6.367 x 108 cm
p. 469, Table 7-3. There was an error in the Excel file that created this table. A revised version (MS Word file) can be downloaded here. This is a revised correction posted 6/16/10. A replacement for dynamic table 7-3 (on the CD) is here.
Figure 8.1 color spectrum is reversed (mainly noticeable for instructor resources)
p. 508, line after eqn 8.10 "f < 107 Hz" should be "f > 107 Hz"
p. 516, eqn 8.16 is missing a μ0 (mu-naught) in the numerator on the right side of the equation (compare to eqn. 8.17)
p. 527, eqn. 8.49, l/4 λ (1/4 lambda) = 20 cm, not 2 cm
p. 535, Fig. 8.20(c), for clarity, the "V" should have a subscript "1"
CD: Please replace dynamic table 7-3 with this corrected Excel file. This is a revised correction posted 6/16/10. Note that updaters to the software are available elsewhere
