Grand Falls of the Little Colorado River. View to right shows the river virtually unincised in the Colorado Plateau. View to left shows the river reoccupying the canyon carved below before the lava flow from the northeastern edge of the San Francisco volcanic field filled the channel, damming the river. The paleocanyon extended some 40 km above this site prior to the flow. River cuts down from lower Moenkopi Frm (Triassic) to the top of the Permian Coconino Sandstone; the bulk of the cliff is Permian Kaibab and Toroweap Formations. March 25, 2007.
